Christmas has come and gone and we are fast approaching 2012!!!!
Shopping crunch time may be over, but its stressful effects are still reverberating through our bodies. Holiday stress can take out the best of us!
This is the beginning of a wonderful year so let's all give thanks as we reflect back on the past year. There are things we want to forget, things that makes us think, "How can we do it better next year?" and then things that happened in our lives that we are so grateful for, whatever happened - happened for a reason.... it is from this moment in time where you make every decision count.
This is also a time where New Years resolutions are made: Having great looking, healthy skin, weightloss (shake off the Christmas pudding), fitness increased (going for that longer walk), feeling good & looking good (then everything fits and you feel great) - I am sure we all have something on our list and YES this year I am going to stick to it!. - I am even going to learn to say NO! (Now that's really hard to do).

In November we launched or two fabulous skincare ranges, yes we are now proud stockist of Prologic Skin Care (New Zealand made by local Wellingtonian beauty therapist) and the 1st stockist other than Rachel's own clinic in New Zealand. Our 2nd range is Priori (our new active lactic acid peel range - that gives truly amazing results for pigmentation and prevention of premature ageing). Look out for our brand new Prologic OMEGA 3 Facial. As you know I only find the best products and services to offer you and I am sure you will be thrilled with the amazing results and relaxation this treatment offers.

I thought that an article written by Rachel Robertson (founder of Prologic) would explain why EFA's are so essential for our skin.
Why Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are so essential
Omega's are so essential to the health of every cell in our body, yet there is a lack of understanding about what we really need and what really works. EFAD (Essential Fatty Acid Deficient) skin need to be treated with extra care, what ingredients should we be looking for?
Sources of Omega's
OMEGA 3
Fish Oils, Kiwi Seed Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Soybean Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Camelina Oil
OMEGA 6
Borage Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Blackcurrent Oil, Sunflower Oil, Spirulina
OMEGA 9 - No longer classed as an Essential Fatty Acid, high quantities are found in the following:
Olive Oil, Almond Oil, Canola Oil, Palmberry Pulp
Omega 9 is now seen as not being a necessary Essential Fatty Acid in our diet, it is thought that we now have an over-abundance of Omega 6 and 9 and are deficient in Omega 3. This is something I see time and time again when using digital analysing equipment. Lipid levels being well below balanced and clients barrier defence system has been compromised.
An EFA Deficient skin will show some very obvious signs including lipofuscins, lipid peroxidation, milia, slow keratinocyte action, poor alignement of bilayers and cellular inflammation.
EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) aside from Omega 9 are not metabolised by the body, so how do we get them. Diet and topical application are the 2 ways a client can increase their skin barrier defence.
Recommendations for Omega 3 internal intake - Preferably from a fish form
3000mg per day - General Skin maintenance
6000mg per day - Skin Condition
9000mg per day - Menopause
Topical Application - has both an immediate and long term effect on every single cell system and function.
Kiwi Seed Oil, contains the highest amount of Omega 3 from a plant source. It contains 61% ALA.
Treating an EFA deficient skin, will take time. The skin barrier defence system has been comprimised. Firstly to increase epidermal lipids we need to look at what ingredients will have a similar effect to the typical composition of skin surface lipids.
Omega 3 - as I have said before topical application of Kiwi Seed Oil
Squalene - the original form of this is from shark oil, however new plant extracts are starting to come through in skin care formulations. The best source being from Rice Bran.
Phospholipids - Lecithin, extracted from Soybean
Biomimetic Epidermal Lipids - Alpha Lipoic Acid and Beta Carotene are great examples.
Prep the skin first for at least 3 weeks before starting any clinical treatments.
